The Crestview Elementary School goes back in time for their Right to Read week. The Right to Read week is a themed week to make learning fun for the students. Every year this week has had a different theme such as Dr. Seuss-themed, Wizard of Oz, Fairy Tale, and much more. This year’s theme was dinosaurs. A lot of students made so much progress with their reading goals this year. There were some students who even loved reaching their reading goals on a stage that was decorated to look like a volcano.
“Making learning fun and memorable is something we strive to give our youngest students with our themed events. We believe that being excited about learning fosters a good attitude about school that will last beyond those early years. The incredible amount of enthusiasm our dinosaur theme has led to this year has been exactly what we were hoping for,” said 2nd grade teacher Shannon Keegan
The fun dinosaur-filled week started with a play thrown by the teachers and faculty members. Mrs. Keegan wrote the fun play that included singing, funny dinosaurs, and of course crazy shenanigans from the cavemen and women. The students had so much fun with it. They laughed, they sang, and some of the students even got involved with the play itself. Not only did the students enjoy it, but the teachers had a great time with it as well.
The teachers then had their students do some fun dinosaur research for small projects. One such project that the 2nd-grade students did was research dinosaurs to create a pet dinosaur. These students then created a story about the pet dinosaur they created. After creating the story they did a fun art project on what their pet dinosaur would look like. They then got to share all the information about their pet dinosaurs.
To end the week the students were visited by the historic creatures themselves. Thanks to a company called “DINO-ROAR” the students got to see some of the dinosaurs they learned about. The company brought in puppets and animatronics of a Brachiosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, and a T-rex. The students were amazed with the prehistoric animals. Some of the students were even brave enough to feed, pet, and take a picture with the dinosaurs.
“ We have have been learning about dinosaurs all week, Preschool through 4th grade. I think this was a good wrap on everything. To see some dinosaurs and for everyone to be excited,” said Preschool teacher Carissa Whitmer.
The students and teachers had such a fun time going back to the Jurassic era during the Right to Read week. The students roared with excitement all week long learning about many different dinosaurs and improving their reading skills.
